There have been reports in the past suggesting Arsenal were scouting young attacker Joelson Fernandes and there has been an update as it seems the club have stepped up their pursuit for the player.
According to A Bola, Arsenal have been very interested in Fernandes and they could sign the 17-year-old winger as they are willing to pay the current 45 million euro release clause, (just under £41 million).
This interesting update seems to emphasise how highly they rate the winger and how much potential he has if they would be happy paying such a high fee for a player who is very young.
So far, Fernandes has only played in the academy at Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon, and he has made 28 appearances, scoring five goals and picking up two assists, per Transfermarkt. The goal contribution tally isn’t as high as supporters might want but the potential is there to see, he knows where the net is and Gunners fans will have to remember that he is a 17 year-old already playing in the U23’s.
His performances are not going unnoticed by his national side Portugal either as he has slowly progressed into the U17 side where he has played three times and scored one goal, per Transfermarkt.
However, with Mikel Arteta stressing that the club will not be able to back him well financially this summer, a deal worth so much for a 17 year-old seems unlikely and also unnecessary, especially when they have numerous players who can play on the wing like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Nicolas Pepe, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli.
Therefore Arsenal should not be spending this much on a young prospect, no matter his potential, and they should spend wisely on players who have the quality to immediately come into the starting eleven.
