There has been a lot of speculation around the future of defender Gabriel Magalhaes and whether he could end up at Arsenal by the end of the transfer window. Supporters of the Gunners can now afford to get a little excited as David Ornstein has given an update on the rumour.
Talking on his YouTube show ‘Ask Ornstein‘ about the defender, via GiveMeSport, The Athletic journalist said: “Arsenal’s interest is credible. They do like him a lot. He’s been high up on their scouting reports for a long time now & it would be a deal potentially that Mikel Arteta would like to do to bolster Arsenal’s defence.”
In Ligue 1 and the Champions League last season for Lille, the defender impressed as he made 30 appearances, averaging 3.3 clearances, 1.8 tackles, and 1.2 interceptions per game, via WhoScored. These stats in comparison with the Arsenal defenders show that he has more tackles per game than anyone apart from Chambers, as well as having the joint-most interceptions (level with Mustafi).
Clearly the 22 year-old is good at the back and not only has an eye for spotting attacking threats but he is also quite good at breaking them up. To be so young and experienced at such a high level makes him seem like a very good acquisition for the Gunners if they can buy him.
If Arteta rates him and the club have been scouting him for a long time, then a defensive asset like Gabriel would be a great signing for the club to help strengthen their defence which conceded 48 goals this season and only kept ten clean sheets, per Premier League.
