With the club having a European competition, as well as the Premier League and two domestic cups to fight for next season, they will need to add some quality to the squad. The latest reports are suggesting that they could be close to signing a defender wanted by many clubs.
According to La Voix des Sports, the Gunners are closing in on a €30 million (£27 million) deal for defender Gabriel Magalhaes. The Brazilian centre-back has apparently picked the North London side over fellow Premier League clubs Manchester United and Everton, who are also interested in the player.
Gabriel spoke with representatives from Arsenal and this has helped him make the decision to link up with Mikel Arteta, as well as former teammate Nicolas Pepe, (who played at Gabriel’s current club Lille).
In Ligue 1 and the Champions League last season for Lille, the defender impressed as he made 30 appearances, averaging 3.3 clearances, 1.8 tackles, and 1.2 interceptions per game, via WhoScored. This shows how good he is at breaking up opposition attacks and it is understandable to see why many teams are interested in signing the player.
He is also only 22 so to be performing well in France and also in the Champions League highlights the potential he has to become a great defender and he would definitely strengthen the Gunners defence.
Arsenal also have issues at centre-back, with Arteta favouring a formation which needs three in that position, the Spaniard needs depth, but at the moment, injuries to Pablo Mari, Shkodran Mustafi and Callum Chambers have meant that the only three natural defenders in the position who are available are David Luiz, Rob Holding and Sokratis Papastathopoulos. The latter is not fancied by Arteta, so full-backs Sead Kolasinac and Kieran Tierney have filled in.
Therefore not only would Gabriel add depth, but with his quality, he would improve the starting eleven. When you compare his stats with the Arsenal defenders he has more tackles per game than anyone apart from Chambers, as well as having the joint-most interceptions at the club, (level with Mustafi).
His age, quality and potential make a price of around £27 million seem like a no-brainer and the possible signing should excite supporters of the club.
