Arsenal’s loss in the North London derby on Sunday highlighted that despite their recent good form, there are still some underlying issues at the club.
One of the main issues is the inconsistency of the defence. Sead Kolasinac made a mistake which led to Tottenham’s first goal, and ESPN gave him a four out of ten, whilst David Luiz and Shkodran Mustafi both received a five out of ten.
This game has led to many discussions about the defence and what Mikel Arteta can do to solve their issues, and former Celtic striker John Hartson has weighed in on the debate.
“Rob Holding does okay when he comes in, still relatively young, I think the two full-backs (Kieran Tierney and Hector Bellerin) are decent, Leno in goal, I like Ceballos, Torreira, Xhaka he seems to like.
“For me, I would get rid of all three [defenders] if I possibly could but I don’t think that’s going to happen, but, all three of them I’m not sure they’d get in of any of the top four teams.”
Although this is arguably quite a big statement to make as Hartson believes the current three central defenders need to be sold, it is hard to disagree as they have been under some criticism for some time. It is understandable criticism as they have made multiple mistakes between them this season.
David Luiz has made two errors leading to goals, Kolasinac’s one against Tottenham was his first, and Mustafi hasn’t made any but he has made errors in the past which he has admitted to and may not lead to goals but can change games, whilst also weakening their backline.
If they continue to be in the defence, then there is no way that the Gunners can get back to where they used to be and challenge for the top four so Hartson makes a very good point.
Whether they can all be sold though is something that we will not know until the transfer window.
