Arsenal are reportedly keen to try and sign a defender from Ligue 1 on a free transfer.
According to Marca, the Gunners are keen on Malang Sarr, who has now left Nice after his contract came to an end. Bundesliga side RB Leipzig have also offered the player a deal as they aim to rival the Gunners for his signature.
The defender is only 21 and therefore has many years to develop into an even better player. His statistics from this campaign show the potential that he has, with match averages of 1.9 interceptions and 1.4 clearances, per WhoScored. He has also been selected for the France under-21 side six times and being noticed by the nation which won the last World Cup suggests that he has what it takes to feature at a high level.
With the Gunners reportedly worried about financial implications from the global pandemic, signing Sarr seem like a sensible idea. If they can acquire him on a free, that would enable them to apportion their transfer budget on other targets.
Would Sarr be a clever signing?
Arsenal have won four of their last five games and kept three clean sheets in those matches, with players like David Luiz, who many blasted over his previous performances when football returned last month, in the middle of defence.
This suggests that Mikel Arteta can entice significant improvement out of his defenders and he could be able to do likewise if Sarr if the Gunners sign the French youngster.
