Even before Mesut Ozil’s minor injury, it was clear to see that manager Mikel Arteta did not fancy the German, as he hasn’t played a single minute since football has returned and he has not even been named in the Arsenal squad for four of the last six matches, per Transfermarkt.
If the 31 year-old wants to play football before he retires, it looks like he will have to leave, and the player is reportedly looking at options away from the club. However, it is thought that he only wants to consider leaving the Emirates when his contract expires.
According to The Sun, the former World Cup winner with Germany is determined to finish his contract at the club, but is already planning his future and only wants to end up at a club in Turkey or America.
He is reportedly on £350,000 a week and the club would love to cut their losses and offload him this summer.
For someone who had such a good start to his career at the Gunners, it looks like his time at the club will end on a sour note. However Arsenal really need to try and offload the player as he is on such high wages and not even playing a game for the side.
The player still has a great creative eye, and this is proven by the fact that this campaign, he has managed on average 2.1 key passes a game, which is the most out of any player in the whole squad, per WhoScored.
With Ozil reportedly hoping to stay until the end of his contract at the club, which ends in June 2021, it means that Arteta might struggle to sell him this summer, and with the stats showing he still creates the most chances, the Spaniard might have to give him a chance before the season ends to not just help Arsenal pick up more wins, but perhaps to also advertise him to other clubs.
The situation seems like quite a stalemate at the moment, and questions need to be asked about who exactly gave him this massive and expensive long-term deal in the first place.
