Arsenal seemingly look to be rebuilding under Mikel Arteta not just for the present but also the future as the north London side do battle with one of their Premier League rivals for promising youngster Nuno Mendes.
According to A Bola, the Sporting Lisbon starlet has been making a name for himself in Portugal and this has attracted the interest of many sides, including Arsenal and Liverpool, as well as Juventus and AC Milan.
No one has made an offer for the 18-year-old yet but the only way that Sporting will allow him to leave is if a club is willing to pay the £41m buyout clause in his contract.
The player has made 15 appearances for Portugal at various underage levels, which highlights at the scale of his potential. At club level, he has made 17 appearances for Sporting’s under-23 side, scoring one goal, and he has started to feature for the first team as he has played nine times at senior level, per Transfermarkt.
Mendes is predominantly a left-back but he has also played as a left midfielder for Sporting’s first team, which shows that he is a versatile player, per Transfermarkt, and this adaptability should stand him in good stead as he progresses in the early years of his senior career.
The only problem is the fee that Arsenal would have to pay, and with Mikel Arteta worried about the club’s finances, so a move for an unproven youngster seems rather unlikely.
In any case, they have enough depth in the left-back position, with Kieran Tierney, Sead Kolasinac and Bukayo Saka all able to play there, whilst Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Reiss Nelson, Willian, Saka and Nicolas Pepe can all play in the left midfield position. Therefore, while Mendes seems to have good potential, he is not someone that the Gunners badly meet, especially in austere financial circumstances.
