Arsenal have been linked with Barcelona playmaker Phillipe Coutinho for a while now and supporters of the North London side may be excited to hear the latest update on this possible transfer.
According to AS Sport, the Gunners have stepped up their pursuit of the Brazilian, and even though it is not definite that he will sign, the reports suggest that, if he does make the move, it will happen sooner rather than later.
It may come as no great surprise that Coutinho would like to be playing in England again after he spent last season on loan at Bundesliga side Bayern Munich. He played well whilst in Germany, making 34 appearances and scoring nine goals whilst also picking up eight assists, via Transfermarkt.
His attacking threat was highlighted by his statistics as he averaged 2.8 shots, 1.4 key passes and 1.6 successful dribbles a game, per WhoScored. Coutinho secured a £130.5m move to Barcelona from Liverpool in 2018 but, with him being loaned out last season, the La Liga outfit evidently view him as a dispensable asset.
Coutinho’s attacking threat is something that Arsenal lack, as German playmaker Mesut Ozil, who has the most key passes per game in the squad at 2.1, via WhoScored, seems to be unfancied by Mikel Arteta.
The Barcelona playmaker also brings a great winning mentality with him as he has managed to win the Copa America with Brazil whilst, at club level, he has won the Coppa Italia and Italian Super Cup, the Bundesliga, German Cup, La Liga (twice), Spanish Super Cup (twice) and the Copa Del Rey, per Transfermarkt.
With 10 trophies to his name and an abundance of attacking creativity, it seems like a no-brainer for the Gunners to bring in Coutinho, particularly with Ozil’s talent going to waste.
