Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg looks to be on his way out of St Mary’s in the summer, with Tottenham heavily linked. However, fresh reports suggest that Arsenal might also make a move for the player in the upcoming transfer window.
According to The Telegraph, Spurs are still favourites to sign the midfielder, whilst Everton are also keen, but the Gunners are considering a late swoop for the Denmark international.
Spurs and Everton have put in formal offers for Hojbjerg but, if Arsenal lodge an offer for the player, it could cause a bidding war between the three clubs.
The former Bayern Munich player, who won four league titles as well as the German Cup three times and FIFA Club World Cup once, per Transfermarkt, only has one year left on his contract at the Saints, so the club want him sold this summer.
The central midfielder is only 24 but has proven to be a reliable Premier League player at Southampton in his 109 appearances in which he has scored four goals and supplied five assists, per Transfermarkt.
His statistics this season show how good an all-round player he can be as he has averaged 2.4 successful tackles, 1.4 interceptions, 1.4 shots and 1.2 successful dribbles per game, via WhoScored.
The fact that he can be a big influence in both attack and defence is a great quality to have and he could add a lot to the Arsenal squad. It would also be great for supporters to be able to brag over their north London rivals if they were able to sign the Denmark international even though Spurs are seemingly favourites to land him.
He seems similar to Dani Ceballos, who is also a central midfielder who can contribute in a defensive and attacking sense, as he has averaged 1.9 successful tackles, 1.3 interceptions, 1.1 key passes and 1.1 successful dribbles per game, via WhoScored. Therefore, it is up to Mikel Arteta to decide if he wants to go back in for a player he knows well after this season or try a new approach with Hojbjerg.
Ceballos seems like the better option, simply because he is already part of the squad, but if they were not able to sign him again for next season, then Hojbjerg would be a great alternative to the Spaniard.
