Arsenal clearly want to bolster their midfield as they are heavily linked with both Thomas Partey and Houssem Aouar, and there has been an interesting development in their pursuit for the latter.
This could lead to a breakthrough in their pursuit of a major transfer target and it is interesting to note how Arsenal may feel that they need a player of Aouar’s calibre over someone like Partey.
It is understandable why the 22 year-old Frenchman is seen as a top player by Arsenal as he made 25 appearances in Ligue 1 last season, scoring three goals and providing two assists whilst averaging 1.1 tackles, 1.8 shots, one key pass and 2.6 successful dribbles per game, via WhoScored. He also featured eight times in the Champions League, scoring one goal and registering four assists, showing that he can perform well at an elite level.
Arteta has stressed the financial struggles under which Arsenal are operating. Therefore, they had to sell before they could submit a bid for a player and, with Emiliano Martinez leaving the club for around £16m, it looks like the Gunners may now have the finances they need to push on and go for Aouar.
This could be a great coup for the club, as he provides some great competition for the current midfielders at Arteta’s disposal and this would hopefully raise the level of everyone in the first team squad.
