Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is seemingly on the lookout for a new centre-back, with the Gunners being linked with John Stones in recent weeks.
Former Arsenal star Ray Parlour has been talking about the speculation on talkSPORT (via Metro) and said: “The centre-half position has always been a problem for a lot of clubs. Will he go? I’d love to see him at Arsenal.
“Whether they can get the money up front and have the money to buy him is another matter. He’s at that age now where he needs to play. I don’t think he’s going to get many opportunities at Man City. I think the manager doesn’t fancy him. He’s young enough to go somewhere else and play on a regular basis.”
It’s hard to disagree with Parlour here. Stones is 26 years old but he has only managed 24 appearances in all competitions for Manchester City so far in 2019/20 as Pep Guardiola has often favoured other options, per Transfermarkt.
This doesn’t mean that he hasn’t got the quality to play for a team like the Gunners and it could be an ideal place for him to go. The north London side conceded 48 goals and only 10 kept clean sheets in the top flight last term, per Premier League, so an England international like Stones, with an abundance of experience in the Premier League and Champions League, could be exactly the kind of defender that Arsenal need in order to strengthen at the back.
However, Parlour is also right about the Gunners possibly struggling to afford the Manchester City man. Stones is valued at £27m by Transfermarkt, and with Mikel Arteta worried about the club not being able to back him in the transfer window due to their financial struggles, it looks like a possible deal for the 26-year-old could be hard to pull off.
