Arsenal lost 1-0 to Aston Villa in their last Premier League game and now there are reports suggesting that the Gunners are interested in a player from the Midlands club.
According to 90min, Manchester City are interested in Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz, and they have a buy-back clause on the Brazilian if they wanted to do so.
However, new reports from 90min suggest that the Gunners have now started developing an interest in the defensive midfielder and are keeping a close eye on his situation to see if they could sign him in the summer.
The 22-year-old has had a solid season in the Premier League with Aston Villa and, after their victory over the Gunners, Dean Smith’s side are above the relegation zone on goal difference with one game left to play, per BBC Sport.
Even though Luiz is a more defensive midfielder, he has managed to pick up two goals and three assists, via WhoScored, whilst also averaging 1.2 tackles and 1.3 clearances per game.
He would probably be seen as an alternative to Granit Xhaka in the middle of the pitch if you were to compare players, but the Swiss international actually wins more tackles per game (1.5). As that key metric for a defensive midfielder points in Xhaka’s favour, this possibly highlights that Mikel Arteta should be looking elsewhere for reinforcements in that position.
Luiz, who is valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt, is still young at 22, but Arsenal need to start pushing up the table next season, so they need players who are at their best now and not ones who have potential and might succeed in the future.
It would be a risk to sign the Brazilian for this reason, especially when the Gunners seem to be restricted in terms of transfer budget, so they should perhaps look elsewhere for defensive midfield additions.
