With goalkeeper Bernd Leno injured, Arsenal have to call upon Emiliano Martinez. The Argentinian could arguably get a testimonial at the club as he has been there for 10 years.
However, he has only made 26 senior appearances in this time and it highlights the Gunners’ need for more depth in that position. They have duly turned to La Liga to address that apparent deficiency.
The 30-year-old joined the Catalan side from Valencia last summer but has only played four times since then, routinely having to settle for a position on the bench as Marc-Andre Ter Stegen’s understudy.
This could be a decent deal for Arsenal as they look to learn from their mistakes of not getting a more established reserve goalkeeper. However, to pay £18m for a 30-year-old who is likely to be a bench-warmer does not seem like smart business.
If they can get him at a lower amount, it would then seem a good idea as he has experience of 243 club games and is trusted to come into a world-class side if called upon.
Leno is expected to miss four to six weeks, so Neto would not even be able to be bought before the German is back, so they should definitely focus on finding a cheaper alternative for the longer-term instead.
