# Arsenal: Jarrod Bowen could be a more prudent option

**With talk of Arsenal making a move for Wilfried Zaha being reported from both [BBC Sport](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48833308) and [Sky Sports News](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11670/11752748/arsenal-launch-40m-bid-for-crystal-palace-forward-wilfried-zaha), another rumour for a winger has since crept into the rumour mill.**

[According to the Sun](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/9414469/arsenal-transfer-news-jarrod-bowen-hull-12m/), the Gunners are preparing a £12 million bid for Hull City winger Jarrod Bowen, who has also been on Tottenham’s radar as far back as the January window [via the Sun](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/8234745/tottenham-dealt-another-blow-in-search-for-striker-as-hull-up-their-asking-price-for-jarrod-bowen/) as well.

Bowen was one of the standout stars in the Championship last season as the 22-year-old hit an impressive [22 goals in 46 appearances for the Tigers](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jarrod-bowen/leistungsdaten/spieler/314875/plus/0?saison=2018) that earned the youngster a spot in the [EFL Championship Team of the Season](https://www.hullcitytigers.com/bowen-named-in-efl-championship-team-of-the-season/) and [being rated on WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/214/Show/England-Hull) as Hull’s top performer last season with an average rating of 7.17, the 18th highest in the Championship [overall](https://www.whoscored.com/Regions/252/Tournaments/7/Seasons/7379/Stages/17369/PlayerStatistics/England-Championship-2018-2019).

With a reported £40 million to spend this summer [according to Football London](https://www.football.london/arsenal-fc/transfer-news/arsenal-transfer-three-key-signings-16377044), Arsenal aren’t exactly in the best position to be spending too much money on a single player, and with Zaha’s value being quoted at £100m by Crystal Palace [via the Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-7195797/Crystal-Palace-slap-100m-price-tag-Wilfried-Zaha-ward-Arsenal.html), a move for a cheaper winger could be the best course of action for Unai Emery this window, which is why a move for Bowen makes sense.

Of course, making the jump from the Championship to the Premier League can be difficult for both players as well as promoted teams, with [Cardiff City](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48075159) and [Fulham](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/47701937) last season both going straight down in their first seasons back in the top-flight, but Arsenal have proven in the past that they are able to find gems in the second-tier of English football.

Rob Holding, for example, was signed for just £2 million from Bolton Wanderers in the summer of 2016 [via BBC Sport](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/36833562), and although the young centre-back joined from a club that had been [relegated the season](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/35948738) prior to his arrival, the now 23-year-old defender impressed instantly, prompting Arsene Wenger to say [via ESPN](https://www.espn.com/soccer/english-premier-league/story/2934237/arsene-wenger-hails-rob-holding-and-says-i-am-sorry-he-didnt-cost-55-million): “Unfortunately no one speaks about the performance of Rob Holding (vs. Leicester City). You should be happy. He is English and 20-years-old. I am sorry he didn’t cost £55 million, so he can’t be good.”

Teammate David Marshall told the [Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-5322763/Everton-Newcastle-Brighton-Burnley-eye-Jarrod-Bowen.html) back in January that he was sure Bowen would get a big move and, while he said the time wouldn’t be right then, perhaps the departure of [Nigel Adkins last month](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/jun/08/nigel-adkins-leaves-hull-city-saying-futures-are-not-aligned) could change things.

Bowen’s numbers last season speak for themselves, and given his age and relatively low transfer fee compared to Zaha, the 22-year-old could be another Championship gem for Arsenal if the Gunners pursue the youngster.
