# Arsenal: Gunners edge ahead in Joao Felix transfer race

**[Arsenal](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/arsenal-fc-news/) are reportedly ahead of [Premier League](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league-news/) rivals [Manchester United](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/manchester-united-news/) in the race to sign Atletico Madrid attacker [Joao Felix](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tag/joao-felix/).**

### The Lowdown: Arsenal linked with Felix

Earlier this month, it was [reported](https://sportwitness.co.uk/arsenal-talks-forwards-agent-phone-hot-tries-take-client-away-january/) that the Gunners are one of the top clubs across Europe who are in the mix to land a potential move for the [£240k-per-week](https://fbref.com/en/squads/db3b9613/2022-2023/wages/Atletico-Madrid-Wage-Details) Portugal attacker.

This season has seen the 23-year-old score three goals and provide three assists in [12](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joao-felix/leistungsdaten/spieler/462250) La Liga appearances for Atletico, before he went on to score one goal and supply two assists in [four](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/340/Show/Portugal-Portugal) appearances for Portugal in the World Cup.

With the January transfer window opening in a week’s time, some behind-the-scenes details have emerged regarding Arsenal’s interest in the attacker.

### The Latest: Arsenal edging Felix transfer race

According to a recent report from the [Daily Record](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-transfer-news/joao-felix-8m-transfer-trigger-28806619) from Duncan Castles, Arsenal’s discussions over a potential move for Felix are believed to be more advanced than those of Manchester United.

The report also adds that Atletico are prepared to let him join a Premier League club on loan next month ‘as long as the Financial Fair Play costs of the Portugal international’s contract are covered in full by his new employers.’

### The Verdict: No-brainer for Arsenal

Having been hailed for his “[complete](https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/simeone-praises-atletico-star-joao-felix-for-complete/hb7tj885jb3y10t7xu9dbuywn)” performances in the past by his manager Diego Simeone, Felix would surely be an exciting addition to Arsenal’s ranks, given how he has recorded more goal-creating actions ([five](https://fbref.com/en/squads/db3b9613/Atletico-Madrid-Stats)) than any other Rojiblancos player in La Liga this season.

Bearing in mind how the Gunners have been dealt an injury blow with Gabriel Jesus set for an extended spell on the [sidelines](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11670/12761483/gabriel-jesus-arsenal-forward-undergoes-knee-surgery-after-injury-at-world-cup-with-brazil), this would make a move for Felix a smart one for Arsenal.

In addition, with the Atletico gem having [experience](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joao-felix/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/462250) playing on the left-hand side of attack, this would also make him a suitable signing for [Mikel Arteta](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tag/mikel-arteta/), who only has Gabriel Martinelli as his main senior left attacking [option](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-arsenal/kadernachposition/verein/11).

If the Gunners have an opportunity to strike a deal for Felix next month, they should do all that they can to bring him to the Emirates Stadium, especially from their seemingly advantageous position.
