# Arsenal: Kieran Tierney assures all he won’t be out for too long

**[Kieran Tierney](https://www.irishtimes.com/sport/soccer/celtic-s-kieran-tierney-to-have-double-hernia-operation-1.3878542) has moved to assure everyone at Arsenal that he will not be out for too long after having surgery on a double hernia back in May.**

Tierney joined the North London club from Celtic in a deal worth [£25m](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11670/11779865/kieran-tierney-arsenal-sign-celtic-defender-on-deadline-day). The move ended a summer-long chase of the 22-year-old in which Arsenal had [two bids rejected for the star.](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11670/11779865/kieran-tierney-arsenal-sign-celtic-defender-on-deadline-day)

Tierney spoke about his move to the Emirates Stadium, and said: “It feels great.”

“Obviously I’m injured now, but I’m just looking forward to getting back on the pitch, training and getting involved with the squad.”

“I had a double hernia operation in the summer. I’m just getting back fit now, I’m just getting back involved with a ball and back running. So hopefully it’s not going to be too long.” [(Source: The Mirror)](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/kieran-tierney-reveals-injury-return-18864352)

Tierney joins the club as a left-back with Sead Kolasinac and Nacho Monreal also options for boss Unai Emery. With the season starting on Sunday and Tierney still a few weeks away from full fitness, Kolasinac and Monreal will look to compete for the starting berth.

Kolasinac was a key part of Emery’s side last season and will be looking to carry on his attacking threat down the left-hand side. However, the Bosnian was shocking defensively and struggled to [average over one in many of the defensive categories.](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/110260/History/Sead-Kolasinac)

However, [Monreal](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/23072/History/Nacho-Monreal) provided better defensive cover at left-back, making more tackles, more interceptions and more clearances per game than [Kolasinac](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/110260/History/Sead-Kolasinac).

Given Arsenal’s struggles in defence, conceding a mass [51 goals in the Premier League last season](https://www.premierleague.com/stats/top/clubs/goals_conceded?se=210), Monreal would be the better option at left-back until Tierney is fit enough to start.

Emery needs to shore up what was a poor backline last season, with the Gunners potentially looking at four straight seasons in the Europa League if they continue to concede goals at the rate they did last season, [1.22 per game in all competitions.](https://www.tablesleague.com/teams/arsenal1/2018_2019/)
