# Arsenal: Mikel Arteta wants to keep Rob Holding at the Emirates Stadium

**There have recently been reports linking Arsenal centre-back Rob Holding with a move to newly-promoted [Leeds United](https://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/leeds-transfer-news-rob-holding-22491195) and there is now an update on Mikel Arteta’s plans for the defender.**

According to [Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11670/12051073/dani-ceballos-gabriel-mesut-ozil-thomas-partay-arsenals-transfer-plans-analysed), the Englishman, who has three years left on his contract, is wanted at the Emirates Stadium by Arteta, so he is therefore expected to stay in north London beyond the current transfer window.

The 24 year-old has been at the Gunners since they signed him from Bolton for £2.7m in 2016, per [Transfermarkt.](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/rob-holding/transfers/spieler/253341) but injury struggles have meant that he has not played as consistently as he would have wanted, as he missed [37 games in a row](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/rob-holding/verletzungen/spieler/253341) due to a cruciate ligament rupture in December 2018.

He played 18 times in all competitions last season, with just eight of those coming in the Premier League, per [Transfermarkt.](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/rob-holding/transfers/spieler/253341)

Despite his impressive 4.5 clearances per game, Holding has struggled in other departments as he has averaged less than one tackle and interception per game, via [WhoScored.](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/288795/Show/Rob-Holding)

He is still only young and so has potential to grow as a player, but if Arsenal want to progress and get back to challening for Champions League football, players like Holding may need to be moved on so that they can strengthen their defensive options, having shipped [48 league goals](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/premier-league/tabelle/wettbewerb/GB1/saison_id/2019) last season.

Maybe he is due to stay because Arteta sees him as someone who can play if others are unavailable – if so, then it is a good choice to keep him until they can look to add greater quality at the back.
