# Aston Villa: Ashley Preece expects two or three more signings

**Aston Villa correspondent for Birmingham Live [Ashley Preece](https://twitter.com/preeceobserver/status/1408011124939841537?s=21) has provided an exciting Villa Park transfer update, but admits there is ‘no chance’ on one of the club’s targets.**

### The Lowdown: Villa’s busy summer

Villa haven’t wasted any time in the current transfer window.

They’ve already brought in [Emiliano Buendia in a club-record deal](https://www.avfc.co.uk/news/2021/june/Villa-confirm-club-record-Buendia-signing/), while also signing [Ashley Young on a free transfer](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2021/jun/17/ashley-young-returns-to-aston-villa-on-free-transfer-from-internazionale).

Argentine forward [Julian Alvarez](https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/aston-villa-transfer-news-alvarez-20894743) has been linked with a move to the Midlands, along with Southampton duo [James Ward-Prowse](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2021/jun/06/aston-villa-set-to-make-move-for-southamptons-james-ward-prowse-transfer-window) and [Oriol Romeu](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2021/06/22/transfer-notebook-wolves-west-ham-keen-move-burnleys-james-tarkowski/).

Buendia and Young won’t be the club’s only additions this summer, according to Preece, who provided an update on social media.

### The Latest: Preece’s update

[Preece](https://twitter.com/preeceobserver/status/1408011124939841537?s=21) posted a [link](https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/aston-villa-transfers-grealish-alvarez-20890061) to his story on Twitter on Thursday lunchtime. Within his [tweet](https://twitter.com/preeceobserver/status/1408011124939841537?s=21), he admitted he is expecting Villa to make another two or three signings.

> “Chewing the transfer fat & it’s a lively one! Villa still very much active in this window; expecting another two – possibly even three- additions; Smith Rowe remains unlikely; Alvarez an option; CDM & CB cover. #avfc Q&A happening now”

In the [story](https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/aston-villa-transfers-grealish-alvarez-20890061), an update on Emile Smith Rowe was waiting, with [Birmingham Live](https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/aston-villa-transfers-grealish-alvarez-20890061) being told there is ‘no chance’ of signing the Arsenal midfielder.

Villa had a [£25m offer turned down](https://twitter.com/David_Ornstein/status/1405161786006028290) for the 20-year-old earlier this month and [were preparing a second bid](https://www.footballinsider247.com/sources-big-update-on-aston-villa-bid-to-sign-smith-rowe-as-new-offer-being-submitted/), but it doesn’t seem as if he’ll be moving to the Midlands.

### The Verdict: Would it be wise to sign a ‘keeper?

It seems as if a defensive midfielder, centre-back and a forward could be the areas Villa add to before the season begins next month.

However, a backup goalkeeper could also be handy, especially with [Tom Heaton set to leave](https://www.avfc.co.uk/news/2021/may/Elmohamady-Taylor-and-Heaton-depart/) the club when his deal expires at the end of the month.

He looks set to [join Manchester United](https://metro.co.uk/2021/05/25/man-utd-news-tom-heaton-agrees-deal-for-return-to-old-trafford-from-aston-villa-14643616/), which will leave Dean Smith with only [Emiliano Martinez and Jed Steer as senior options](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/aston-villa/kader/verein/405).

Hopefully, [Martinez will go through another campaign injury-free](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/emiliano-martinez/leistungsdaten/spieler/111873), however, if he is sidelined, Smith would then just have Steer to call on.

Signing an experienced shot-stopper who is happy to serve as cover may be a wise option, and there are plenty around on possible [free transfers](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/transfers/endendevertraege/statistik?plus=0&jahr=2021&ausrichtung=Torwart&spielerposition_id=alle&altersklasse=alle&land_id=0&yt0=Show).
