# Aston Villa: Fans react to Dean Smith’s comments following loss to Southampton

**Lots of [Aston Villa](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league/aston-villa/) fans were not pleased with manager Dean Smith after his side fell to a [4-3](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/54679346) defeat to Southampton on Sunday.**

Following the match, the club [tweeted](https://twitter.com/AVFCOfficial/status/1322917489379082250?s=20) out a video of the manager’s post-game comments. They supported the video with one of his comments. He [said](https://twitter.com/AVFCOfficial/status/1322917489379082250?s=20):”The way we finished the game was really good and we need to take that into next week at Arsenal.”

The result and the performance would not have been what a lot of fans would have wanted, especially in the first half as they were losing [3-0](https://www.sofascore.com/southampton-aston-villa/PV) following two free-kick goals from James Ward-Prowse and a goal from Jannik Vestergaard.

Villa have now [lost](https://www.google.com/search?q=aston+villa+results&oq=aston+villa+results&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l5j69i60l2.5271j1j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#sie=t;/m/0bl8l;2;/m/02_tc;mt;fp;1;;) their last two matches, and with [Arsenal](https://www.google.com/search?q=aston+villa+results&oq=aston+villa+results&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l5j69i60l2.5271j1j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#sie=t;/m/0bl8l;2;/m/02_tc;mt;fp;1;;) to play next, Smith has to get his tactics right to have a chance of picking up any points. Despite the past two results, the club still sit [sixth](https://www.sofascore.com/tournament/football/england/premier-league/17) in the league as it currently stands.

### Here is what Villa fans have said about Smith following the game:

> Fair enough assessment. Defensively poor for the first but then done by 3 great finishes. Showed character to come back. Need to see more of McGinn sitting alongside Luiz as he did second half, and Barkley pushed forward, as that is when we have looked our best this season.

> Perhaps it might be a good idea to play for 90 mins, not turn up when the damage has been done. Defending again, abysmal.

> Big learning experience for Smith last 2 games. We need to keep our shape. We struggle to match teams when they press us. Midfield poor last 2 games. Very disappointing today.

> I believe he got it wrong in formation in the 1st half! So admit it and move on

> We need to go 4231 and put mcginn in woth douglas or take John out and our in Connor bc 7 goals in two games is madness
