# Aston Villa: Fans react to Rodrigo Bentancur update

**Tottenham are now in pole position to sign Aston Villa target Rodrigo Bentancur, with Villa withdrawing from the race.**

That’s according to Juventus correspondent [Romeo Agresti](https://twitter.com/romeoagresti/status/1487446232427642882), and, as to be expected, a number of Villa fans were quick to flock to the update on social media.

Villa had originally set their sights on a move for the Uruguayan and were [hopeful](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/aston-villa-transfer-rumours/villa-fans-rodrigo-bentancur-transfer-latest-john-percy/) of landing the central midfielder before Monday’s deadline.

Johan Lange offered the Italian giants [£20.8m](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/jan/28/aston-villa-rodrigo-bentancur-bid-turned-down-by-juventus-transfer) for the 24-year-old, however, that was rebuffed with Juventus wanting more. It now seems as if a move to north London could be on the cards, with Spurs launching an [official](https://twitter.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1487576068097773582) bid for Bentancur late on Saturday evening.

[Agresti](https://twitter.com/romeoagresti/status/1487446232427642882) took to Twitter on Saturday afternoon, revealing Tottenham are now leading the race for Bentancur after Villa took themselves out of the running. [Fabrizio Romano](https://twitter.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1487771311481012226) has since provided a further update, revealing a move to Spurs has been agreed and will be completed soon.
