# Aston Villa: Lucas Digne on Steven Gerrard’s radar

**Aston Villa could make a move for Everton’s Lucas Digne during the January transfer window, according to [The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath](https://twitter.com/mcgrathmike/status/1479419305402187776?t=wsI2IIqMqGelQ6YPH3V5Tg&s=19).**

### The lowdown

Villa [confirmed on Friday](https://www.avfc.co.uk/news/2022/january/07/villa-agree-coutinho-/) that they had reached an agreement over their first signing of the January window – a loan deal for FC Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho.

Digne’s future looks to lie away from Everton, with manager Rafael Benitez [revealing in a recent press conference](https://twitter.com/Paddy_Boyland/status/1479434172443803648) that he wanted to leave.

He [hasn’t played a minute](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/lucas-digne/leistungsdaten/spieler/126664) for The Toffees since [a row](https://theathletic.com/3003403/2021/12/08/a-row-in-spanish-with-benitez-in-front-of-team-mates-why-digne-was-dropped-for-arsenal-match/?source=emp_shared_article&redirected=1) with the Spaniard in front of his team-mates.

The club have already moved for another first-team left-back in the form of Dynamo Kyiv’s Vitaliy Mykolenko.

### The latest

After the ‘statement signing’ of Coutinho, McGrath looked to who might be next for Gerrard and Villa.

“They have also considered EFC left-back Lucas Digne, who could move this month,” he wrote on [Twitter](https://twitter.com/mcgrathmike/status/1479419305402187776?t=wsI2IIqMqGelQ6YPH3V5Tg&s=19).

### The verdict

Digne [feels](https://theathletic.com/3003403/2021/12/08/a-row-in-spanish-with-benitez-in-front-of-team-mates-why-digne-was-dropped-for-arsenal-match/?source=emp_shared_article&redirected=1) that Benitez’s style of play has constrained his ability to impact the game going forward, but prior to this season he was [one of the outstanding creative talents in the Premier League](https://twitter.com/OptaJoe/status/1349090044217331715).

What’s more, a football analytics firm even found that he was one of the [top ten in the world](https://twitter.com/Paddy_Boyland/status/1460948337344102404) in his position.

Digne is valued at [£27million](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/lucas-digne/profil/spieler/126664) by Transfermarkt, but Benitez has surely weakened Everton’s negotiating position by publicly admitting that he’d submitted a transfer request.

On the back of Coutinho, this would be another indication that Villa mean business.
