# Aston Villa must strengthen at the back by signing Matt Targett

**Aston Villa are now without a manager and seemingly without a plan of just how this strong squad will gain promotion back to the Premier League this season.**

Things have escalated very quickly with Aston Villa in recent weeks and it all seems to be very negative. With a talented bunch of players and a great set of fans, the focus should, more importantly, be diverted to helping the players be successful on the pitch.

With the January transfer window already just a few months away, Aston Villa should continue delving into the market once again in search for a left-back like Southampton’s Matt Targett.

Targett, ([who is valued at £6.3 million on Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matt-targett/profil/spieler/250478)) was a massively important player for Fulham during their promotion to the Premier League last season when they beat Aston Villa in the play-off final.

Although some fans may still be bitter, they cannot hide the fact that the left-back is a much-needed addition at Villa Park and one that would help stabilise things in defence.

The 23-year-old played 21 times for Fulham last season, including when he helped keep a clean-sheet in the play-off final. With the ability to play as a left-back or further forward as a left-midfielder, the strenuous run of Championship fixtures could be made a lot easier with another wide player at Villa Park.

Neil Taylor is currently absent meaning Alan Hutton has filled the void but for a team chasing a top-flight return, what better way to try and do so than by signing a player who has experienced just that already?
