Aston Villa correspondent Ashley Preece has claimed that the club ‘love’ young defender Josh Feeney, who has now signed a first professional deal at Villa Park.

The Lowdown: Feeney’s pro contract

Feeney, described as a 'technically gifted' player by former manager Andy Powl, made the move to the Midlands last summer from Fleetwood Town.

Since then, the 17-year-old has made 24 appearances in Villa’s academy, the majority of which came from the U23s. The centre-back also caught the eye of Steven Gerrard, who included the teenager in multiple Premier League matchday squads.

Villa confirmed on Tuesday that Feeney has signed a first professional contract after impressing for the club’s U18s and U23s last season.

The Latest: Preece’s claim

Talking in a Q&A for Birmingham Live, Preece was asked by one supporter for a transfer update from Villa Park.

The reliable journalist confirmed on Tuesday morning that Feeney was due to sign his first pro deal on improved terms, adding that ‘Villa love him’ and describing him as a ‘good player’.

The Verdict: Smart move

It’s clear to see that Feeney is making great strides at Bodymoor Heath, becoming a regular for the U23s and breaking into Gerrard’s first-team plans.

Therefore, it is a no-brainer for Johan Lange to tie him down to a first professional contract. You’d like to think that Feeney is a star of the future, and another impressive campaign in the Midlands could result in a senior debut at Villa Park, making him one to watch over the coming months.
