Former Premier League star Carlton Palmer has urged Aston Villa owner Wes Edens to seal the signing of Ross Barkley on a permanent basis.
Palmer was talking to Football FanCast and he believes that Villa would be the ‘perfect’ club for Barkley, and that he has shown to fit right in under Dean Smith.
Barkley had joined Villa on a season-long loan deal from Chelsea in the summer transfer window, after the 26-year-old had fallen down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge because of their signings of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech (as per BBC Sport).
Since arriving at Villa Park, the Englishman has done well under Smith by contributing to three goals in six Premier League appearances so far. He scored once in the club’s 7-2 win over Liverpool and grabbed an assist in their 3-0 win over Arsenal as well as bagging the winner at Leicester.
Palmer believes that Villa would be the ‘perfect fit’ for Barkley long-term. He said: “I think it’s the perfect fit for him, I really do. I’ve always liked Ross Barkley.
“The only thing with Ross is he picks up too many injuries, but he’s a very, very good player, he is a talented player. I think to go to somewhere like Villa where there’s a lot of players around his age, all got something to prove, I think he just fits in nicely in the way the midfield plays with [Jack] Grealish.
“I’m just conscious of the amount of games he plays, he’s got to get that under his belt, where he’s playing. There’s no point coming in and being sensational for five or six games and then missing the next 10 games. He’s got to get 28 games in a season where he’s playing really well.”
Should Villa be desperate to sign Barkley?
Transfer Tavern Take
Barkley has picked up a rating of 7.37 in the Premier League for Villa this season and he has been the club’s third-highest rated player in the campaign.
He has come up with the second-highest number of key passes per game for the side this season, also completing the second-highest number dribbles for Smith’s side (as per Whoscored).
This clearly suggests that Barkley has been an important player for the Villans this season. Considering those numbers, perhaps Villa should indeed try to sign the Englishman permanently whenever the opportunity arises.
