Darren Bent has told Football Insider that he believes Jack Grealish will be delighted to have John McGinn back alongside him in the Aston Villa starting XI.
Grealish has been excellent for Villa this season, netting an impressive seven goals and gaining six assists in the Premier League (as per Transfermarkt). With McGinn alongside him in midfield, Dean Smith has a strong duo in the middle of the park.
Scotland international McGinn had also been in good form, with three goals and two assists in 20 games this term. Since his ankle injury just before Christmas, Villa have struggled with six defeats in 10 Premier League matches.
Appearing for Villa in a friendly against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, McGinn’s return to fitness has now been addressed by former Villans striker Bent.
“It’s massive,” he told Football Insider. “Hopefully now Jack’s back won’t be as sore because he’s been carrying that team for a long time now. I’m sure he’s more delighted than anyone to see John McGinn come back.
“McGinn was brilliant last season, brilliant earlier on this season when he wasn’t injured. The work rate he puts in, the quality he has with the ball at his feet, the combination him and Jack have got, it’s just another top-quality player they’ve got.
“I’m pretty sure if he’d stayed fit and him and Jack could have stayed in for the majority of the season, I would have liked to think Villa would be in a much better position than they are in.
“They’ve got him back in that crucial part of the season so that is like having a brand new, top-quality signing, he is massive for Aston Villa coming back out of this injury.”
McGinn’s return to full fitness should certainly prove to be a real boost for Smith to utilise over the next month as the Premier League season resumes. The Scotsman and Grealish are two of Villa’s key players and it will be interesting to see if they remain at the club past the summer, especially if the Midlands club suffer relegation to the Championship.
For now though, both will undoubtedly be eager to get back on the pitch and help keep the club’s top-flight status alive.
