What Dean Smith had to say about Barkley
Speaking via the Birmingham Mail, Smith said: “He wasn’t near making the game (vs Manchester United). He hasn’t had enough minutes on the training ground but I fully expect him to be ready for our next Premier League game (against Spurs on January 13th). I’m not sure if I’ll start him in the FA Cup game (against Liverpool). He needs more minutes on the training ground.”
This is worrying for Villa
Despite Villa already having a great creative asset in Jack Grealish, they will definitely lose a huge threat when Barkley goes back to Chelsea in the summer. This is due to the fact he managed 3.4 shots, three key passes and 2.2 successful dribbles per game (WhoScored) before his injury.
Chelsea manager Frank Lampard praised Barkley in the past as he said: “I am delighted with him and he just needs to keep those levels. There is more to come and his attitude has been first class.”
It is frustrating and worrying for supporters of the club that Barkley has been injured for a lot longer than expected. Also, the fact that he can’t get to full fitness in the FA Cup fixture next weekend is also frustrating as it would have been the perfect time to get him ready and raring to return for the Premier League.
Villa have some very tough fixtures coming up in the division as well as they face Tottenham, Everton and Manchester City in their next three games so getting Barkley back would be a huge boost.
Having players like the Englishman fit is crucial if the club want to stay fighting for a top-half finish in the Premier League this campaign so Smith will be keen to unleash him against Spurs.
