Aston Villa: Dean Smith heaps praise on Emiliano Martinez - Aston Villa News

Aston Villa summer signing Emiliano Martinez is looking like a great coup for the club, and Dean Smith has been discussing his impact on the season so far.

What Smith had to say about Martinez

As reported by the Express and Star, the Villa manager said: “I think Emi has probably exceeded what I thought he would bring to the team, certainly in terms of his calmness and personality. I think the latter has been really pleasing and a great addition to the dressing room. But he hasn’t exceeded what I expected him to be like as a keeper.

“I expected him to make the saves he did at Southampton and he would probably be the first to say he would expect to make them too. He was the first in the dressing room thanking his team-mates for the blocks they made when needed.”

Mentality shift

Smith isn’t the first person this season to pile the praise on Martinez and he won’t be the last, with pundit Michael Brown saying: “He’s going so well, he’s got that confidence and it just looks like a brilliant signing.”

Indeed his stats show why he has been a “brilliant signing”. In his 19 appearances this season, he has made 66 saves and kept ten clean sheets (Premier League) – this is the second most clean sheets in the division.

That said, it is particularly interesting to hear of the mentality Martinez has brought off the pitch at Villa Park. The club currently sit ninth in the Premier League, and if they win their two games in hand they could end up as high as fifth (SofaScore). Coming from a club who consistently challenges for Europe, this boost in “personality” could go a long way to helping the Villains do the unthinkable and finish in the top six.
