Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz has told friends that he still wants to join Arsenal, as per Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Deadline Day drama

Labelled an ‘important’ player for Villa by his former Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, the 24-year-old was attracting late interest from the Gunners on transfer deadline day. Arsenal reportedly made three bids for the Brazilian, but NSWE stood firm and Luiz remained a Villa player.

Alas, he is into the final 12 months of his contract at Bodymoor Heath, and it looks as if he is intent on leaving the club.

The Latest: Luiz wants out of Villa

According to Football Insider, Luiz has told friends that he wants to move to London, with talks held between Arsenal and the midfielder’s representatives since the transfer window shut.

The report adds that the Brazilian has held talks with Villa owners NSWE over a new deal, but as we know, an agreement is yet to be reached.

The Verdict: January departure?

You can see why Villa blocked an exit for Luiz due to how late in the transfer window it was, but it could make sense to sell the player in the New Year.

Should his contract situation remain the same, January will be the final opportunity for Villa to receive a fee for the midfielder's exit.

Therefore, with Luiz wanting out of the Midlands, it could make sense for the club to search for a new midfielder of their own over the coming months to replace him in 2023.
