Ollie Watkins received a maiden England call-up on Thursday afternoon, which, as expected, received plenty of attention from several Aston Villa supporters on social media.

The 25-year-old pipped Leeds United’s Patrick Bamford and Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham to a place in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad.

Watkins will join up with the Three Lions for the first time next week following this weekend’s Premier League clash with Tottenham for a World Cup qualification triple header against San Marino, Albania and Poland.

Watkins’ impressive Villa form

The Villa man has scored 12 goals in all competitions in his first season in the Midlands after arriving in a club-record deal last summer.

Watkins, who has never appeared for England at any level, was praised by Southgate for his work off the ball, speed and attacking intelligence following his call up.

Villa fans react

Villa shared a 35-second video on their official Twitter page of the forward seconds after his place in the squad was confirmed.

This is what these Villa fans had to say to the post, with one describing the news as ‘unreal’.
