Plenty of Aston Villa fans have responded to Dean Smith’s post-match comments after the 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.
Having returned to action in the Premier League last Wednesday in a 0-0 draw with Sheffield United, Villa knew that they had to gain a result against Frank Lampard’s side to get themselves out of the relegation zone.
The Midlands outfit looked likely to grab something after a solid opening 45 minutes which saw defender Kortney Hause find the back of the net and put them 1-0 up. However, a turnaround in fortunes saw goals from Christian Pulisic and Olivier Giroud seal all three points for the visitors, as per Sky Sports.
The defeat leaves Villa sitting 19th in the Premier League table and involved in what looks a four-team battle to remain in England’s top flight. Bournemouth, Watford and West Ham United all failed to win at the weekend and are now sitting gingerly in the relegation-threatened areas, whilst Norwich are getting cut adrift at the bottom.
Smith’s side must now ensure that they bounce back from the defeat but some fans are not optimistic as reactions proved when Twitter account @villareport shared the manager’s post match comments.
Indeed, speaking via TEAMtalk, Smith said: “Today, we’ve come up against a top-four team in the last 15-20 years. It was never going to be easy. We took the lead and remained hopeful we’d keep the clean sheet. A bit of quality and a little bit of fortune made a difference.”
These words appear to have angered an element of the Villa faithful, who did not agree with his comments at all. Indeed, they seemed to suggest that the ex-Brentford boss was just making excuses and that in reality, the team didn’t play at all well – they managed just 26% possession in the game.

Was he watching the same game? A little bit of quality and fortune? We had 16% possession!

The blokes delusional. They are simply not good enough, why he’s playing jack on the wing is beyond me.

Sick of the excuses. It’s time to show the team’s around us there’s life left in us yet, we just need to actually play the lovely attacking football we signed up for when we offered him the job. He’s working with the best players he’s ever managed and they are terrified to attack

Bit of quality and little bit of fortune 🤔. We were outclassed, our thought, out fought. I get the defensive set up against Chelsea. When we went 2-1 down we had to change. All we did was change personnel not the system. Worrying.
