Many Aston Villa fans raved over Matt Targett for his performance and in particular his role in the opening goal in the Premier League match against Burnley.
Ollie Watkins scored his eighth goal of the season in the Premier League in the 14th minute at Turf Moor (SofaScore) with a lovely finish. However, Targett’s role was crucial as he drilled a perfect ball into the box which landed at the striker’s feet. One fan called the cross ‘class’, whilst another said it was ‘unbelievable’.
It has been a very solid campaign so far for the left-back and in the 17 appearances before this match against Burnley he has managed 1.8 tackles, 1.8 interceptions and 2.4 clearances per game (WhoScored). These type of stats highlight how hard it has been to get past him and he is a huge reason as to why the club already had nine clean sheets before the match against Burnley.
No doubt Dean Smith will be very proud of Targett and his performances so far this campaign, and if he can keep it up, then there might be shouts calling for him to make the England squad in the near future.
Here is how Villa fans reacted to the performance of Targett:
“Matty Targett really does have superb delivery. So often causes chaos with them drilled low crosses. “
“Roberto Carlos has posters of Matt Targett in his bedroom”
“Targett with an unbelievable cross. Brilliant assist”
“Matt Targett becoming reborn the last few fixtures. Love to see these assist in his locker. Great finish by Ollie too!”
