Aston Villa: Fans react as Henri Lansbury has his contract terminated - Aston Villa News

Many Aston Villa fans are reacting to the latest transfer news surrounding the club as they announced that midfielder Henri Lansbury has mutually agreed to terminate his contract.

The fact that Lansbury didn’t even make the 25-man Premier League squad highlights that Dean Smith sees the midfielder as surplus to requirements. He was on £40,000- a-week (around £2m per year), which made him one of the 11 best-paid players at Villa Park (spotrac).

Lansbury has had a very decent career, scoring 50 goals and picking up 40 assists (Transfermarkt). At Villa, the goals haven’t been as frequent as he has only managed two, however he has made over 50 appearances so was certainly a key figure in the promotion campaign.

The time feels right for the midfielder to part ways and with him now 30, he will be wanting to play more consistently before he retires. Meanwhile, Villa announced the signing of another midfielder in Morgan Sanson, and this had pushed Lansbury even further down the pecking order.

Here is what Villa fans said following the announcement:

“Shame it didn’t work out for him, hope he does well at his next club”

“Talented player & at the time, I was really excited about his arrival. The sort of player that we needed for a better style of play. Shame Bruce was in charge & had no clue how to use him. Looked a bit lost after that. Good luck, Henri! Wish you well!”

“One of those that just didn’t quite work out, looked a promising signing but he never really got into top gear. It may turn out well for him moving away from Villa and I wish him all the best in his new quest, I guess it just wasn’t to be at B6. #UTV
