Aston Villa donated their share of the gate receipts from Tuesday's Carabao Cup tie back to Barrow, the League Two side confirmed.

And, as to be expected, a number of Villa supporters heaped praise on their club for their generosity on social media.

Dean Smith’s side brushed aside The Bluebirds on the pitch 6-0, with youngster Cameron Archer scoring a hat-trick on his first start.

Anwar El Ghazi netted twice and Frederic Guilbert also scored at Holker Street in front of a crowd of 5,349 – the highest attendance at the stadium for 30 years.

Villa, who will now face Chelsea in the next round, were due 45% of the gate money from the second-round tie but decided to donate that back to the home side.

Villa fans react

Barrow posted the news on Twitter on Thursday morning, with their tweet going viral. This is what these Villa fans had to say in reply, with one describing Villa’s act as ‘amazing’.
