Many Aston Villa fans are reacting to the news that defender Frederic Guilbert will be heading out on loan before the transfer window shuts on Monday.
According to @SportsPeteO, via @villareport, the full-back has agreed to go on loan to Strasbourg until the end of the season. It is especially hard for him to get game time now since the arrival of Matty Cash, who has made the right-back spot his own with a solid first campaign, so far, at the club.
This news has split the fan base, as some are wishing him well and others think they need him for squad depth – one supporter called the move ‘bizarre’.
The £4.5m-valued ace has struggled for game time at the club for a while now. He hasn’t featured in the Premier League this season and the last match he played in the division came back in July (Transfermarkt).
Therefore, it is probably best if the club do let the 26-year-old depart, even if it is just on loan. He can play some more regular first-team football and the spell away might help him grow as a player. If Villa still feel that he is not to the level they need by the end of the loan, they can then look to sell him in the summer.
Here is what Villa fans said following the news:
“Smart move. Guilbert needs playing time. Hopefully he can return strong next season to replace Elmo.”
“If we lose Targett and Cash then we have Taylor and Elmo. I like the guys but offer nowhere near what those offer attacking wise and defensively. Definitely worried about our defensive depth in all areas”
“Bizarre from us. Gonna miss him”
“I find this quite sad he’s a class player yes we have cash but freddie was decent last season”
“A shame. Hopefully he can prove himself and become the back up to Cash once Elmo moves on/contract up”
