Aston Villa have had a great start to the season as they currently sit sixth, but former Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has not been very impressed by Trezeguet despite side’s fantastic form.
What the former Villa star had to say about Trezeguet
Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “For Aston Villa to get to the next step they need to go again and bring in some more quality. I like Trezeguet, he does a job but he’s not the winger that is going to take you to that next step.
“If you can bring in a winger that has better quality in the final third then he can take you to the next step. Then teams can’t double up on Grealish when they’ve got another winger on the opposite side who is outstanding. Then you’ve got Barkley and Watkins in the middle.
“If Aston Villa can bring in another winger it’s something they must do because you can’t stand still in football, you’ve got to keep improving your squad.
“I think this season we’ll be aiming for between 10th and 14th but if we’re ambitious then we’ll want to go again the season after.Challenging for Europe is something the owners will want to do and Dean Smith will want to do in the next couple of years.”
Is Agbonlahor right?
The Egyptian only got one assist so far this season in the top flight, but the winger has produced a decent attacking threat, managing 1.7 shots, one key pass and 1.1 successful dribbles per game (WhoScored).
The match against the Southampton, where he had three shots on target, also winning three ground duels and two aerial duels (SofaScore), was a great example of his impact both on and off the ball.
Villa defender Tyrone Mings has spoken highly of the attacker. He said: “He’s an important player for us, as he’s showed in the past few weeks.”
However, the fact that he has only managed seven goals in 49 appearances (Transfermarkt) suggests that some extra depth may well be needed if he cannot improve his end product, so Agbonlahor’s harsh words may prove to be true come next year.
