Aston Villa correspondent Gregg Evans has been reacting to an injury update from Bodymoor Heath ahead of tonight’s meeting with Southampton.

The Lowdown: No goalkeepers in training

Villa have had a number of issues to deal with this week, with Emiliano Martinez, Robin Olsen and Jed Steer all missing training on Thursday.

Martinez was sent home due to illness, while Olsen has a knee injury and Steer remains a long-term absentee. Forward Ollie Watkins was also struggling with illness on Thursday, while Matty Cash and Jan Bednarek are already ruled out for this evening’s game.

The Latest: Evans reacts

Taking to Twitter, Evans labelled the situation regarding Martinez, Olsen and Steer as ‘unusual’.

However, the reliable reporter added that ‘late checks are required’, with Gerrard believing they will be available.

The Verdict: Fingers crossed

It seems to have been a chaotic 24 hours inside Villa, and those late checks may have taken place today regarding Martinez and Olsen’s availability this evening.

Should the pair be ruled out, Gerrard may be forced to use youngster Filip Marschall, but hopefully, he’ll have at least one of the two ready to start at Villa Park.

Villa haven’t had the best of starts to the season, so this evening could be a turning point in their campaign, and hopefully with the likes of Martinez, Olsen and Watkins in the match-day squad.
