Journalist Pete O’Rourke has been reacting to Aston Villa’s interest in Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.

Gallagher returned to Chelsea over the summer following an extremely successful loan spell with Crystal Palace, where he was described as “outrageous” by Eagles podcaster Dan Cook.

The 22-year-old has since been linked with a move to Villa, with NSWE thought to be weighing up a move for the England international.

Chelsea may wait until later in the transfer window before making a final call on his immediate future, but the rumours have left O’Rourke excited.

The Latest: O’Rourke’s comments

Talking to FootballFanCast, O’Rourke said that it would be a ‘huge signing’ if Villa and Steven Gerrard were able to bring Gallagher to the Midlands.

“I think we saw what Conor Gallagher provided for Crystal Palace last year. He was probably one of the best players in the Premier League, for me, on his day. So, he will definitely be a huge signing for Villa if Steven Gerrard was able to get him.”

The Verdict: Patience required

It looks as if the Blues may not green light a Stamford Bridge exit until late in the window, so Villa chiefs may have to remain patient over a possible move.

Gallagher, who has scored 16 senior goals during his career, could be the midfielder Gerrard needs, though. He has plenty of experience as a holding, central or attacking midfielder and would also provide an option on the right-hand side if needed.

His versatility could be priceless for Gerrard, who is after a ‘big addition’ in midfield ahead of his first full season in charge, so Gallagher could be the perfect signing, even if it is on loan.
