The Lowdown: Pochettino rumours
Steven Gerrard appears to be under pressure at Villa Park, although a 1-1 draw with defending champions Manchester City last time out may have eased some tension in the Midlands.
Reports towards the end of August suggested that NSWE wouldn’t hesitate to sack the Villa boss, should results fail to improve. Pochettino, who interestingly has no agent, is thought to be a ‘credible candidate’ and on Villa’s shortlist, if the club decide on another managerial change.
The Latest: O’Rourke’s comments
Talking to The Transfer Tavern, O’Rourke had this to say on Villa and Pochettino, believing both parties could be open to a move, should NSWE part ways with Gerrard.
“I’m sure if they were looking for a new manager at some point I think Pochettino would definitely be somebody that they would consider and I think it’s a club that he would consider as well.”
Are you Gerrard in or Gerrard out?
The Verdict: Time needed?
Villa showed signs of improvement against City earlier this month, and with games against Southampton, Leeds and Nottingham Forest coming up, it could be wise to give Gerrard more time.
Yes, he has only won just 12 of his 35 matches as Villa boss and Pochettino is currently available, however, we are still in the early stages of the campaign, so it could be a risk to change managers already.
However, anything but three points against Southampton on Friday may only increase speculation regarding Pochettino potentially coming in, so it could be a link to keep an eye on.
