Aston Villa face a ‘must-win’ game with Newcastle United on Wednesday evening as the Premier League relegation scrap continues to heat up.
Dean Smith’s side continue to sit in the bottom three after failing to pick up a win following the restart of England’s top flight.
Approaching the game, Villa face off against former manager Steve Bruce, who guided Newcastle to a superb victory over Sheffield United at the weekend.
Looking ahead to the tie and Smith’s team’s selection, Transfer Tavern have predicted how he will line-up, suggesting he will make just the one change in personnel from the game against Chelsea.
It looks likely that Orjan Nyland will continue in between the sticks, having started the last two games. Midfielder Danny Drinkwater was not allowed to play against his parent club Chelsea at the weekend but he is unlikely to force his way in to the starting eleven.
Ezri Konsa is likely to continue at right-back after his goal against the Blues, although he could soon face competition for his place fromFrederic Guilbert, who is thought to be closing in on a return from injury (Birmingham Mail).
John McGinn has gradually got himself back to full fitness but Villa fans will be concerned at scenes showing him holding an ice pack on his hamstring after coming off against Frank Lampard’s side and it remains to be seen if Smith will go with two up front or stick with youngster Keinan Davis.
There has to be a time where Dean Smith changes things up an goes with two up front and tonight could be the night for that after leaving Mbwana Samatta on the bench from the start since the restart.
He will be fresh and raring to go and it could be that he replaces winger Anwar El Ghazi, allowing Smith to go with two up front and move Jack Grealish more central into a number 10 role.
