Sky Sports co-commentator Jamie Carragher criticised Douglas Luiz during Aston Villa's 2-1 win away to Brighton in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

The Lowdown: Villa win at Brighton

Unai Emery's side made the trip to the Amex Stadium looking to build on last weekend's memorable 3-1 win over Manchester United, rather than their midweek EFL Cup defeat to the same side.

They made a disastrous start to the game, though, conceding within the first minute when Luiz was robbed in a dangerous area, prior to Alexis Mac Allister firing home.

Thankfully, Danny Ings equalised from the penalty spot and then buried a finish in the second half, as the resurgence under Emery continues.

The Latest: Carragher critical of Luiz

Speaking on the commentary for Sky Sports during the game, Carragher admitted Luiz was poor in the lead-up to Brighton's opener:

"They're not happy, the Villa players. But they shouldn't be looking at the referee, they should be looking at themselves.

"Emery wants his goalkeeper to play out from the back but it cost them in midweek with Robin Olsen and now it's cost them with the goalkeeper [Emi Martinez] here.

"But certainly Douglas Luiz didn't cover himself in glory. He wasn't strong enough."

The Verdict: Made up for it

Luiz has been an impressive performer for Villa in recent years - he has been described as 'outstanding' by Gabby Agbonlahor - but he will know he should've done better for the opener.

The Brazilian lost possession eight times, according to Sofascore, although in fairness, he did play a positive role in Ings' winner, pressing effectively to make up for his earlier error.

While some may have felt the Brazilian was fouled before Mac Allister scored, he simply had to show more physicality and awareness of his surroundings, and he will know he is usually far better in those situations.
