Aston Villa are still actively 'pursuing' a move for Marseille and France midfielder Matteo Guendouzi, journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed.

The Lowdown: Guendouzi linked with Villa

The 23-year-old has grown into a reliable footballer for Marseille, playing the fifth-most league minutes this season under Igor Tudor.

The Frenchman has recently been linked with a move to Villa as Unai Emery looks to continue bringing in the right player who can suit his system.

It is a prospective transfer which could still materialise, judging by a recent claim from one prominent journalist.

The Latest: Villa still 'pursuing' Guendouzi

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Romano said that no bid has been tabled as of yet but Villa remain keen on signing Guendouzi.

The Italian outlined:

"For Guendouzi, Marseille are still waiting for Aston Villa to make an official proposal to them, but they are pursuing the player."

The Verdict: Good potential signing

Guendouzi could be a very astute signing by Villa if they can get it over the line, whether it happens this month or during the summer transfer window.

The £41k-per-week midfielder has already proven himself in the Premier League with Arsenal, appearing 57 times in the division - mostly when Emery was in charge at the Emirates Stadium - and he now seems a more rounded and mature player than the one who drew Mikel Arteta's ire in north London in 2020.

Guendouzi has fire in his belly and could add both bite and quality in midfield, averaging 1.2 tackles per game and boasting an 88.1% pass completion rate in Ligue 1 this season. Also, Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville once hailed the Frenchman as 'fantastic' during his time with Arsenal, further highlighting what a good signing he could be for Villa if they can entice him to come back to England.
