Rumoured Aston Villa transfer target Matteo Guendouzi is 'aware' of interest in him but no bid has been tabled yet, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: Villa keen on Guendouzi

In recent weeks, the Villans have been strongly linked with a move for the midfielder, with Unai Emery potentially seeing him as an ideal signing. The Frenchman is maturing all the time as a player, making 17 appearances in Ligue 1 this season and chipping in with three assists in total.

The January transfer window closes on Tuesday but it still looks as though Villa could possibly seal a move for the 23-year-old.

The Latest: Guendouzi 'aware' of interest

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Romano claimed that Guendouzi knows about Villa's interest but no bid has been made so far, even though Marseille are primed for one.

The Italian stated:

"At the moment, from Marseille, they are still waiting for the official bid. They know about the interest; the player is aware of the interest of Unai Emery but still no official bid."

The Verdict: Get it done

Time may be running out but Guendouzi is exactly what Villa could do with bringing in this month, adding young legs to their midfield and improving squad depth.

He now has 81 appearances to his name for Marseille and has registered an impressive 18 assists in that time, while he has also averaged 1.2 tackles and 0.9 interceptions per game in the league this season, albeit that he lags behind John McGinn (2.2) and Douglas Luiz (1.9) for the former metric.

The £40k-per-week midfielder could be viewed as a longer-term option than the likes of McGinn and Luiz, both of whom have been linked with exits from the club over the last 12 months, with Arne Friedrich (director at his former club Hertha Berlin) calling him a 'great player'.
