Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings could be in a race against time to feature against Everton this weekend due to a groin problem.

The Lowdown: Captaincy change

The England defender hasn’t had the best of summers at Bodymoor Heath, with Steven Gerrard replacing him as captain at the end of July. John McGinn has taken over as skipper for the 42-year-old's first full season in charge at Villa Park, with the Scotsman's opening game with the armband ending in defeat at Bournemouth.

Mings didn’t even feature in the defeat at the Vitality Stadium, with Gerrard going with summer signing Diego Carlos and Ezri Konsa, and it looks as if things have gone from bad to worse for the 29-year-old.

The Latest: Mings injury news

The Daily Star shared a story on Monday evening regarding Mings.

They claimed that the defender had a scan on Monday due to a groin issue which showed bruising, something that may keep him out of training for the next few days.

The Verdict: Everton doubt?

Should Mings fail to train for the majority of the week, then you’d expect that he will be a doubt to feature against Frank Lampard’s side next Saturday.

Labelled an ‘outstanding leader’ by England manager Gareth Southgate, the 29-year-old missed just two Premier League games last season, so he could already match that figure at the earliest point in 2022/23.

Gerrard may well be looking to ring the changes after a sloppy opening weekend display, but it looks as if he could be sweating on Mings’ fitness heading into the lunchtime fixture on Saturday.
