Aston Villa are looking at a potential move for Villarreal manager Unai Emery, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Gerrard speculation

Gerrard’s position in the Midlands appears to be hanging by a thread after just two wins from the opening ten Premier League fixtures.

The Telegraph suggested on Monday that it could be a matter of time until the 42-year-old is sacked, even with positive results against Fulham or Brentford. They name-checked Mauricio Pochettino as an ‘ambitious’ target, and it looks as if the club have another boss on their shortlist.

The Latest: Emery still of interest

FI shared an update from well-placed sources on Monday, claiming that Gerrard’s dismissal could be formalised by the end of the week.

They added that as well as Pochettino, Emery has also been sounded out as a target, with his deal at Villarreal set to expire next June.

The Verdict: One to watch?

Emery’s preferred formation is a 4-4-2 with a double pivot, and the Spaniard has bounced back following his Arsenal sacking back in 2019 by winning the Europa League with Villarreal.

The 50-year-old has plenty of experience all across Europe and has been hailed as a ‘hard-working’ manager by Edinson Cavani.

Villa may find it difficult to lure Pochettino to the Midlands, with one reporter believing the Argentine is holding out for a return to Tottenham, so Emery could be a smart alternative. It may well be one to keep a close eye on, as it looks as if there is a serious possibility NSWE will be on the hunt for a new boss before the break for the World Cup.
