Aston Villa: Dean Smith set to reward Jacob Ramsey with first team football - Aston Villa News

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has informed youngster Jacob Ramsey that he will be given opportunities in the first team this season, according to reports.

Smith set to reward Jacob Ramsey

The 19-year-old was heavily linked with a move away from Villa Park during the domestic transfer window after several clubs came in for him interested in taking him on loan.

However, all of those approaches were blocked by the English tactician who was keen to keep hold of him for the 2020/21 campaign.

How many goals have Aston Villa averaged per game?

The Midlands giants rate Ramsey highly and handed him a long-term contract back in January 2019, and he then went on to impress for Doncaster Rovers before lockdown in March.

According to Football Insider, Smith will give Ramsey a ‘key first-team role’ this season despite spending £71m in the transfer market on a number of high-profile signings this summer.

This goes to show how highly Ramsey is rated by his manager, having scored 16 goals from 38 appearances for the under-18s and finding the net eight times from 27 outings, which along with his three goals on loan at Doncaster brings his overall goal tally at all levels to 27, as per TransferMarkt.

Huge statement

Evidently, those statistics alone have convinced Smith to such an extent that he deserves a shot in the first team. This is a huge call considering the likes of Ollie Watkins and Ross Barkley have come through the door.

Despite this, Ramsey is a versatile midfielder who mostly plays in the number ten role, but can also play deeper, as well as on the left wing and at centre-forward.

Smith previously described the young Englishman as a player with ‘an awful lot of potential’, which is evident after he was recently selected for the England under-20 side and scored on his debut during the Three Lions’ 2-0 victory against Wales.

Only time will tell whether he can live up to expectations, but since he is being given the chance to impress, Ramsey must grab it with both hands and make the most of it.
