Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville put his views across on what the 'problem' is with Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish after his surprise exclusion from the England side that beat Belgium last night.

Grealish doesn't fit the system

The Three Lions triumphed 2-1 against the number one ranked side in the world (according to FIFA) in a game that saw Dean Smith's captain surprisingly left out after putting in a solid performance against Wales just days earlier.

Despite his good game, head coach Gareth Southgate gave him little recognition after the game, which upset the Villa faithful, and he then proceeded to leave him out of yesterday's match.

Neville, who picked up 85 caps for England and was in a defensive coaching role during Roy Hodgson's reign, offered his views as to why Grealish may be out of favour with Southgate.

Speaking to Sky Sports (via the Mirror), Neville said that believes that the system that England play may not suit him. “I think there’s a bit of a problem for Jack Grealish", he said.

“If you stick with a 3-4-3, he wouldn’t be one of those two midfielders in the middle against the big teams. When you look at the front three, you’ve got [Jadon] Sancho, [Marcus] Rashford, [Raheem] Sterling, [Harry] Kane, [Dominic] Calvert-Lewin and more. Where would he get in there?

“He’s talented, he’s earned his place in the squad and I thought he was brilliant the other night. But this system does hamper him. If it was 4-3-3 or 3-5-2, you could see him playing in that system a little bit more.”

Neville asking for trouble

Neville's comments may incense Villa fans. After Grealish's stunning showing against Liverpool and Wales, they will be wondering what more their captain has to do to get a look in on the biggest stage.

It does seem incredibly harsh but football is a brutal world even during the best times. Grealish just needs to keep doing what he's doing for Smith's side.

Further down the road, more opportunities will come his way. He may even be selected for a place at the European Championships. Time will tell, but Southgate is not exactly Mr Popular with Villa fans at this moment.
