Aston Villa are eyeing a move for Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara, according to a report from TEAMtalk.

The lowdown

Football Insider claim that the Finland international, who played under current Villa boss Steven Gerrard at Ibrox, is up for sale ahead of the January transfer window. He nearly joined Nice on the final day of the summer market but the Ligue 1 club ran out of time to get the deal done.

Rangers need to make one or two big-money sales next year to raise funds for incoming transfers, and Kamara is viewed as a prime candidate to be sacrificed. It has apparently been agreed that he'll be able to leave Ibrox if an offer of around £10m is received.

The latest

TEAMtalk report that Kamara will 'come into Steven Gerrard's thinking at Aston Villa'.

Having pondered a move for the midfielder last January before deciding to explore other options, the 42-year-old now views the Finn as a potential reinforcement ahead of the prospective departures of Douglas Luiz and Morgan Sanson.

The Villa manager is confident that Kamara could handle the transition from the Scottish Premiership to the Premier League.

The verdict

As per WhoScored, Kamara is 'very strong' when it comes to passing, while he can also boast dribbling as one of his greatest strengths.

He can be safe in possession and suitably cautious off the ball, refusing to dive into tackles, but he's also willing to attempt spectacular long-range efforts at times.

Compatriot and former Rangers goalkeeper Antti Niemi feels that the 26-year-old has elite credentials, making the case that he would 'look very good' at a top-six English club. Meanwhile, Gerrard's former assistant Michael Beale has hailed Kamara as both 'a lovely footballer' and a 'top person also'.

From those testimonies, it seems like the Finland ace would be an astute signing, and Rangers' apparent willingness to sell for £10m makes this something of a no-brainer to at least consider from a Villa perspective.
