Aston Villa: Michael Brown praises Emiliano Martinez despite defeat to Leed - Aston Villa News

Former Leeds United midfielder Michael Brown has described Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez as an “unsung hero” despite his team losing 3-0 against Marcelo Bielsa’s side last night.

Martinez wins the plaudits

The 28-year-old found himself on the wrong end of the scoreline at Villa Park as his side squandered the opportunity to go top of the Premier League going into today’s matches.

Patrick Bamford scored a hat-trick to condemn the Villains to their first league defeat of the season, although the Argentinian shot-stopper still managed to make six saves and record three high claims during the 90 minutes (Sofascore).

Martinez recently made the switch to the Midlands in a transfer believed to be worth £17m after spending 10 years at Arsenal, but he only made his first Premier League appearance with the Gunners last season.

How many goals have Aston Villa averaged per game?

Speaking to Football Insider, Brown was pleased with what he saw from Martinez and believes he is making a difference for Villa.

“He has been their unsung hero, hasn’t he? He’s impressed”, the 43-year-old said.

“Just looking at the results their getting, the difference and where they are, the style’s slightly changed. They know Martinez is comfortable with his feet so we’ve seen them moving it around with more confidence.

“He’s obviously set that style up, he feels it is the way to go and Martinez seems to be confident, he’s obviously been drilled in doing that sort of setup, as we know, and I think he’s comfortable with it.”

Reset button activated

It’s almost as if Dean Smith came along in the summer and pressed the reset button on Martinez’s career, as he is making up the time that he lost trying to break into Arsenal’s teams over the years.

His former manager Mikel Arteta has described the way he trains and behaves on a day-to-day basis as “phenomenal” (via The Mirror), and despite not being involved in the team for much of his time with the Gunners, it is apparent that Martinez is an exemplary professional who Villa are lucky to have.

Having started all but one of their Premier League games so far this term, the 28-year-old looks set to be a crucial performer for the Villans throughout the season.

In other news, Villa fans were delighted with ‘outstanding’ performance of £16m ace against Leeds.
