Aston Villa: Summer target Trevoh Chalobah could leave Chelsea -Aston Villa News

Aston Villa transfer target Trevoh Chalobah could leave Chelsea in January, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The lowdown

Senior ESPN writer Tom Hamilton reported in August that Villa held an interest in signing the centre-back on loan, while journalist Jacque Talbot revealed this month that Chalobah – the subject of enquiries from Villa, Inter Milan and AC Milan – could be granted a temporary move in January.

The 23-year-old has only made one appearance for the Blues so far this season, playing 90 minutes against Leicester City at the end of last month.

The latest

Romano took to Twitter on Saturday night to issue an update on Chalobah’s future.

He said that the Englishman could move in the winter in search of game-time if his situation at Stamford Bridge remains the same.

The journalist tweeted: “Trevoh Chalobah could leave Chelsea in January. He’s still hoping to play more – and that’s why Chalobah could leave if nothing changes.”

The verdict

The outlook appeared bleak for Chalobah when Chelsea invested in two new central defenders during the summer transfer window, spending more than £100m on Wesley Fofana and Kalidou Koulibaly.

Villa simply have a greater need for the 23-year-old than Graham Potter’s side at this stage, with Diego Carlos ruled out for much of the season following an Achilles tendon rupture.

As per FBRef, Chalobah is an excellent distributor of the ball, ranking in the top 10 percentiles among centre-backs in the big five European leagues for pass volume and completion, while his ball carrying can also be a weapon (84th percentile for progressive carries, 91st for dribbles completed). He also offers an impressive goal threat too, placing in the very highest percentile for goals per 90.

Thiago Silva called him ‘the future of Chelsea’, while Ian Wright says that he’s reminiscent of Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, so hopefully Villa might be able to seize upon any uncertainty over the defender’s Stamford Bridge future.
