Belgium manager Roberto Martinez is amongst Aston Villa’s top targets to replace Dean Smith.

That’s according to Graeme Bryce of The Sun, and as to be expected, a new manager link has had plenty of Villa fans talking on social media.

The club parted ways with Smith on Sunday following five successive defeats, and according to Bryce, Martinez is top of their wish list alongside Steven Gerrard.

The 48-year-old has been in charge of Belgium since 2016, winning 50 of his 66 games in charge. However, he has failed to lead the country to a major tournament final, with Belgium reaching the semi-finals at the 2018 World Cup and the quarter-finals at Euro 2020.

Martinez has also lost 107 of his 265 games in charge as a Premier League manager, with his most recent position in England coming with Everton. He also has a relegation on his CV from his time at Wigan, in spite of leading them to FA Cup glory in the same season.

Villa fans react

The AVFC Faithful shared the links to Martinez on Twitter. Here is what these Villa supporters had to say in reply, with many not keen on the Spaniard moving to the Midlands, perhaps put off by his less than encouraging previous at Premier League level.
